#16 - Major Depressive Disorder in Frozen's Elsa (Character)

Intro: Mike and Ryan talk about the reaction to the recent Gillette Razor AD about Men's responsibilities. They discuss the reaction from supporters of the ad, who are against toxic masculinity, and reactions from dissenters, who feel it's an attack on Men.

Body: Keeping in mind that this character was not intended to portray depression, it is taken into account that it is commonly accepted that a metaphor for it is present in Elsa. The guys breakdown the accuracy of the portrayal of Major Depressive Disorder in the character Elsa, for better or worse.

Unpopular Opinions: In this week's special segment, Ryan and Mike do Unpopular Opinions, where Ryan proposes a wild opinion and Mike is forced to take the opposite stance, and try to defeat Ryan in a debate. Ryan decides that Elsa's parents are the worst parents in Disney Movie history, while Mike says he think it's actually George Darling from Peter Pan.

Ratings:

Ryan - 3 of 5 Warm Hugs for accuracy

Mike - 3 of 5 Stars for awesomeness

Synopsis: "Today we are covering the character Elsa, from the 2013 Disney EPIC ADVENTURE, Frozen.

Princess Elsa, the heir to the throne of Arendelle, is born with magical freezing powers. She spends her childhood openly using her special abilities to play games and go on adventures with her younger, and only sister Anna. In a tragic accident, Elsa nearly kills Anna with one of her patented ICE blasts while playing. Anna is only saved when she is rushed to to see Grand Pabbie Troll.

Grand Pabbie tells Elsa's parents, that he must remove Anna's memories of Elsa's magic. He warns them that Elsa's powers will grow, and that fear could cause her to lose control.

Elsa, heartbroken and guilty over what she feels she has done to her sister, begins to seclude herself and hide her gifts. When her Parents are suddenly killed during a storm at sea, Elsa goes even further into Isolation.

When Elsa comes of Age she is crowned Queen of Arendelle. Overcome with the stress and pressure of the public eye, Elsa sends Arendelle into an endless winter and exiles herself from her own home.

Anna, fights to get Elsa back, but is struck in the heart with yet another, even MORE powerful ice blast. BUT! Through the power of love, Elsa overcomes her fears, returns to Arendelle, saves Anna, and brings the warmest of summers back to the land."

Pop Psych 101
In an effort to educate and normalize, two therapists, Ryan Engelstad and Hayley Roberts, talk candidly about mental health and illness through the lens of movies, music, books, and TV. Common pop culture mental health tropes are analyzed, and the accuracy of their portrayals are in question, for better or worse.
PopPsych can be raw and real, and very serious; it can also be very funny. If we really want to normalize the conversation about mental health, then we need to start having real and normal conversations.
